Edgbaston Labour MP Gisela Stuart has warmly welcomed the decision to improve road safety at a local traffic blackspot.
Council chiefs have finally been persuaded to upgrade the zebra crossing on Monument Road, Edgbaston, into a pelican crossing. The current crossing, located close to the junction with Plough and Harrow Road, is felt to be unsafe by many residents and a cause of traffic congestion along this extremely busy road.
“This is very welcome news. Pelican crossings are far safer and it will enable residents and shoppers to cross this busy road far more easily.
I am also pleased that the Highways Department are planning to link the new crossing to the traffic signals at the junction of Monument Road and Hagley Road. This will prevent traffic queuing back from the crossing to the Hagley Road junction and also reduce delays for motorists.”
A consultation is being carried out with local residents and traders on the proposals before work begins later this year.
