Cadbury Battle // January 7th, 2010 // Constituency News
Gisela Stuart welcomes the news that Kraft’s biggest shareholder has voted against their plan to bid for Cadbury.
Gisela recently met with fellow West Midland MPs and Trade Union Representatives from Cadbury, to co-ordinate the strategy to retain Cadbury as a Birmingham based company and preserve the jobs of thousands of workers. The action was in response to the takeover bid by US firm Kraft.
MPs from the West Midlands signed an Early Day Motion in the Commons showing their support for Cadbury. The Motion also raised concerns about the ease of launching hostile takeover bids.
Cadbury employs 6,200 staff in the UK. Kraft has closed 22 of its plants and cut 60,000 jobs over the past 10 years.
Gisela Stuart said; “It is imperative that we fight to retain the major companies that provide jobs in Birmingham. We have lost many of the manufacturing firms.”
