Carers Week 2009 // June 8th, 2009 // Constituency News
The vital work carried out by Britain’s army of carers is being celebrated this week.
Six million people in the UK provide unpaid care and support to a friend or relative who could not otherwise manage because of illness, frailty or disability. Many of these carers are completely unknown to statutory agencies and others who can provide much needed help and support.
Carers Week, which runs from 8 to 14 June, will highlight the enormous and often unrecognised role played by carers and boost efforts to provide better support and services to carers and those for whom they care.
Local MP Gisela Stuart says:
“As the Carers Week campaign rightly points out, the UK’s carers truly are the nation’s secret service. I know from experience in my own constituency that carers perform a vital role and yet their tireless work all too often goes unrecognised and unsupported. I am backing Carers Week because I believe that this situation needs to change. Carers deserve a fairer deal”.

For two years I received Carers Allowance for looking after my mother who lives alone in Acocks Green and is housebound. That was until my hours of working for my wife, who is visually impaired and self employed, increased to cover her driving and notetaking at meetings went over the income threshold. This income is from Access to Work.
I am not in caring for money but the pittance that is Carers Allowance and now nothing for looking after my mother keeps her out of state care and in her own home.
Carers should be recognised and be paid now to cover some of their expenses driving for and shopping for elderly people.
MPs have huge expense allowance and Carers, the unsung heroes, receive very little or nothing to show for their efforts.
