Bartley Green
The 2001 Census found that Bartley Green had a population of 21,793. The Bartley Green ward is a largely residential suburb and is in close proximity to green expanses such as the Woodgate Valley Country Park.
The reservoir is by far Bartley Green’s main claim to fame. This vast water supply (46 hectares) is well-known for being the place where the television presenter Bill Oddie did some of his first bird watching, as it is such an important natural reserve for birdlife and other forms of wildlife. It was built at the start of the 20th Century and the water that it collects comes directly from the Elan Valley in Wales. Given the freshness of the water it is used primarily as drinking water. The reservoir is also commonly used for sailing and other water sports.
Bartley Green is home to Newman University College. Originally founded as a Catholic foundation teaching college in 1968, Newman was given university college status in 2007. Newman University College ranks 7th in the country for low levels of graduate unemployment, (3.4%) and 17th for the proportion gaining graduate level jobs (79.8%). Set overlooking the Worcestershire countryside Newman offers a far more intimate experience than some of the larger inner city universities.
