Edgbaston
The 2001 Census found that Edgbaston’s total population was 23,527. Edgbaston was traditionally one of the more affluent areas of Birmingham attracting the middle classes. Although there remain some wealthier parts the ward now attracts a broader range of the population. It is also one of the more ethnically diverse areas of Birmingham , comprised of a larger percentage of minority groups than the average for the city.
Birmingham University is perhaps Edgbaston’s most important landmark. The ‘Red Brick’ University was founded in 1900, although its origins can be dated back to the Birmingham Medical School of 1825. Today it is well-regarded both in the UK and internationally. The total student population was recorded in 2008/2009 as being 30,608.
Sports fans know Edgbaston as being the home of Warwickshire County Cricket club. Formally established in 1882, the venue now attracts fans from all over the world. The club holds both county and international matches, including hosting the ‘Ashes’ cup most recently in July 2009.
The Edgbaston ward is also well-known for being home to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. This 15 acre expanse was opened in 1832 and to this day it is a wonderful place to enjoy beauty, peace and tranquillity.
Edgbaston houses the brand new University Hospital , Birmingham ’s first new hospital in 70 years. When it opens in 2010, this hospital will provide state of the art medical care to hundreds of people throughout the West Midlands .
