Free prescriptions for cancer patients // March 31st, 2009 // Constituency News
31 March 2009
From tomorrow, people undergoing treatment for cancer will no longer have to pay for their prescriptions.
The change honours a commitment made by the Labour Government to lift the burden on cancer patients, after research showed that nearly half were being forced to cut back on basic needs, such as food or heating, to pay for vital medicines.
Welcoming the news, local MP Gisela Stuart:
“Anything we can do to lift the burdens from cancer patients and their families is welcome. This change will help around 150,000 cancer patients under 60, by easing the financial pressures at a distressing time.
It is important that we ensure every cancer patient is aware of this change. That’s why I am asking local health chiefs to tell me what they are doing to let patients know they are entitled to free prescriptions. I do not want to see anyone miss out because of a lack of accurate information”.

My husband can no longer work due to late stage 4 adenocarcinoma. The script prices are killing me since I am the only income now. The dr.s say his life expectancy is 18 months. I stand to lose my house and car because now the money has to go to his drugs… how can I get his meds for free?!

Please advise if ensure is free for cancer patients. A dear friend has oral cancer is in severe pain. No help with prescriptions and unable to eat regular food. Any help with information in Ontario would be greatly appreciated. He lives in St catharines and has to pay to see Dr. In Hamilton. Thank you ever so much for any help you could give.
