Gisela Backs Churchill Scholarship Scheme // April 14th, 2009 // Constituency News, Uncategorized

Labour MP Gisela Stuart is urging Birmingham residents to take advantage of a prestigious scholarship scheme established to honour the memory of Britain’s wartime Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill.

Each year, the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust awards 100 Travelling Fellowships to people from all walks of life who are seeking overseas experience to help them develop their careers, improve their local community or enhance a personal interest.  The scheme was established following Sir Winston’s death in 1965 and has brought benefit to thousands of people over the last forty years.  Past award winners have included nurses, artists, scientists, engineers, sportsmen and women, members of the emergency services, carers and craft workers.

Applications are now being sought for the 2010 Fellowships.  Applicants are asked to submit details of a project they wish to undertake overseas that meets the categories set out by the Trust.  If they are successful, the Trust will award them a grant to undertake their project.

Application categories for this year include: Adventure and Exploration, Business and Finance, Education and Vocational Training, Environment, Support for Children, Science and Engineering, Young People, Arts and Older People and the Treatment of Chronic Conditions.  Bids will also be considered for the “Churchill Connection” category, which covers any project relating to Churchill’s personal interests, including politics, history and journalism.

Gisela says:

“Churchill was the man who inspired Britons to victory during the war and the Fellowships ensure that he continues to inspire modern Britons to achieve their aspirations.  The work funded by the Trust since 1965 has enhanced people’s personal opportunities, brought benefits to local communities and businesses and helped develop research in the fields of science and technology.  I would urge anybody who has a project they believe could benefit from this scheme to make an application”.

Application forms can be obtained on-line at www.wcmt.org.uk, or by sending a SAE to: The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, 15 Queen’s Gate Terrace, London SW7 5PR.  The closing date for applications is 6 October 2009.
