MP supports Campaign for High Speed Rail // June 26th, 2011 // Constituency News

yes-to-high-speed-rail

Gisela Stuart, this week joined a rally in Westminster supporting the Yes to High Speed Rail campaign.

Commenting on their support for the campaign Gisela Stuart said:

“I am passionate about supporting high-speed rail and urge everyone in Birmingham Edgbaston to do the same. High speed rail will significantly help Britain’s economy; creating jobs and boosting Birmingham Edgbaston. The knock-on effect of a true nationwide high-speed rail link will be huge bringing jobs and investment to millions.”

Professor David Begg, Director of Yes to High Speed Rail agreed with Gisela Stuart by saying:

“It is fantastic to have the support of Gisela Stuart. Building a new high-speed rail line can be a part of solving some of the big questions facing this country today and in the future. This is why businesses and unions joined MPs from all parties today in London to campaign for high-speed rail.”

The rally was part of an on-going nationwide tour of the UK being undertaken by the Yes to High Speed Rail campaign bus highlighting the benefits to the country of the positive impact of high-speed rail - for jobs, investment, growth and a better quality of life.

The campaign bus has visited Manchester, Birmingham as well as London and is scheduled to be the centre-piece of further rallies in Leeds, Sheffield and other cities in the North West, North East, Yorkshire and the Midlands.

The Yes to High Speed Rail campaign is independent from the Government and HS2 Ltd, representing employers from across the country who believes Britain needs a modern, high speed rail network to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.

The Campaign is backed by business people from across the country. Some of these business people employ large numbers of people, some employ just a handful.

Directors for the Campaign are Professor David Begg, Adam Raphael and Nigel Harris.

The initial high speed rail line will be from London Euston to Staffordshire with a spur line to Birmingham City Centre.

The new line will start from a redeveloped Euston station and run in tunnel to Old Oak Common in west London where there will be an interchange with other road and rail services.  It will then continue on the Chiltern Line corridor, then the A413 corridor, and then across country using existing road and rail corridors wherever possible.  It will eventually pass between Kenilworth and Coventry and will serve a new station at the NEC.  The line will then continue towards Coleshill and Water Orton, from where there will be a spur line into Birmingham City Centre along the existing rail corridor to Curzon Street, the location of Birmingham’s first City Centre railway station.

The main line towards the north of England will continue from Water Orton to west of Tamworth and through the Lichfield area, the existing proposed line finishing just before Colwich junction where the lines to Liverpool and Manchester diverge.
