MPs Visit Birmingham’s Decontamination Super Centre // March 15th, 2010 // Constituency News
Gisela Stuart visited the £10m King’s Norton B. Braun Sterilog centre which handles the decontamination and sterilisation of surgical instruments from ten hospitals in the West Midlands.
The company has worked in partnership with eight acute NHS Trusts and Primary Care Trusts across Birmingham to bring the sterilisation of surgical instruments up to the latest European standards.
Richard Matthews, Managing Director of B. Braun Sterilog Ltd, said: “Previously surgical instruments were processed by individual hospitals but this project has centralised services in a modern ’supercentre’ which is fully compliant with new EU regulations and provides a lot more back-up facilities to ensure the delivery of a 365-day-a-year service.”
Edgbaston MP Gisela Stuart and her Labour colleague and Selly Oak MP Lynne Jones toured the facility.
Gisela said: “I am impressed by the procedures carried out at the King’s Norton centre in sterilising and tracking surgical instruments. The service regulates the procedure across several NHS Trusts to ensure a consistently high level.”

I note that you visited B braun’s decontamination facility in king’s norton in 2010. I am currently sitting theatre at a local hospital where staff are so frustrated by the terrible service provided. Instruments come back dirty broken or lost. We have had to cancel operations because of missing instruments. This loss is costing £100,000. Two lists are about to be cancelled today as all the orthopaedic instruments have been lost. B braun’s service was brought in with no alternative service in the region. I have removed the name of the hospital I work in as previous staff have complained nothing has been done. They have been seen as causing trouble. The surgeon just said this has been the most costly mistake for the NHS. We now have to save a huge amount of money. Do you think B Braun is providing an acceptable service to hospitals in the west midlands? I look forward to hearing from you?
