Your comment that you would be pleased to see the removal of a road underpass on grounds of safety is astonishing. As you will be all too aware, the junction of the Hagley Road with Lordswood Road has long been notoriously dangerous for both drivers and pedestrians alike.
Fortunately, there is a subway at that junction which is intrinsically safer for pedestrians to use than running the gauntlet of trying to directly cross that very busy intersection.
Unfortunately, the proposal to which you refer, and lend your support, ironically seeks to improve the Lordswood Road junction and make it safer by removing the very means and only safe way of crossing the road.
Your rationale appears to be that (the subway) has long been a danger spot for pedestrians. On the contrary, my family safely and regularly uses the subway and has done for many years. Without this facility my children (and my mother who is blind) will no longer be able to safely cross the Hagley Road to visit friends, use the park or shops.
If there are concerns about personal safety in the subway the solution should not be to remove the safe crossing but to address those concerns by improving security and maintenance of the subway.
You describe these dangers as longstanding. It would be interesting to learn what steps you have taken during your own longstanding tenure to bring about a reduction in those dangers.
For the record, I have formally responded in writing to an invitation from Birmingham City Council to comment upon the proposals for Lordswood Road Junction. I have suggested an alternative option for consideration that would deliver significant cost savings (>40%) and improve the safety for pedestrians. It is too lengthy to post here but you are welcome to view it if you wish.
