Scams Awareness Month 2010 // February 10th, 2010 // Constituency News
Marketing scams are a growing problem in the UK. The fraudulent, unsolicited advances by post, telephone, email or text message offer false promises designed to con people out of their money.
It is estimated that one in 15 people fall victim to a scam, but fewer than 5% of victims report their experience, the most commons reasons being embarrassment, shame or denial.
As part of the Scam Awareness Month, the Office of Fair Trading and Trading Standard Services are promoting a nationwide initiative called Scamnesty. With the aim to raise awareness of scams and to encourage people to drop their scam mailings into designated Scamnesty bins. The gathered contents of these bins will provide the intelligence for these authorities to fight the fraudsters.
Designated Scamnesty bins are located in local libraries and other public areas.
There is an online bin at www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/scamnesty along with further information on the scheme.
Gisela Stuart said;
“I am aware of constituent’s who have fallen victim to scams at great costs financially.
We all need to play a part in warning others about the different types of scams that are circulating. It is important to pool our knowledge of scams, to enable the authorities to issue warnings and build a case against these types of fraudsters.”
