Wake Up Call! // February 22nd, 2012 // Constituency News
Gisela Stuart joined young people from Wake Up Call, who held a peaceful, demonstration in Old Palace Yard at 6pm on Tuesday, February 21st, alongside other Members of Parliament and with the support of Labour party leader Ed Miliband.
On February 21st 2012, (21.2.12) millions of people in over 85 countries around the world demonstrated peacefully outside their main government buildings to call upon their leaders to drive progress in the most important issues that face their countries. Over 22,000 people have demonstrated their support. Ed Miliband, leader of the Labour Party, has also expressed his unwavering support for the UK’s call to action.
Wake up Call was launched at the One Young World summit in September 2011.
Narraser Gordon, Wake Up Call UK coordinator explained:
“Each country has its own Wake Up Call. The UK has formed its Wake Up Call around the issue of gun and knife crime. The Government’s ”zero tolerance” policy on gun & knife crime is not working. Young people across the country are still being subjected to the heinous crimes of those who carry weapons, and four out of five criminals who use knives escape a jail term.
The message to Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy Prime Minster Clegg: “Invest in the Fight. No guns, No Knives”. This call to action will request that the government invest community groups working on the front line to tackle gun & knife crime, which have shown success in reducing rates of violent crime.”
