Woodcock Hill go to Westminster // June 12th, 2009 // Constituency News
Pupils from Woodcock Hill Primary School got the chance to visit the Houses of Parliament this week, thanks to a new scheme designed to cut the cost of school trips to Westminster. The Parliamentary Education Service is piloting a scheme to subsidise the costs of state school trips to Westminster, following a report from the Commons’ Administration Committee, who are keen to give more youngsters the chance to visit our national Parliament. Under the scheme, schools in Birmingham can claim up to half of their travel costs.
The Bartley Green-based school were alerted to the scheme by local Labour MP Gisela Stuart, who also met with the pupils during their visit to the historic Palace of Westminster.
Gisela said:
“Visiting Parliament makes for a memorable school trip and is a valuable addition to work in core subjects like citizenship and history. Parliament is the key to out democratic system and we should be doing all we can to share its history, traditions and culture with the next generation of citizens. I am delighted that Woodcock Hill School were able to benefit from the travel scheme, which I hope will become a permanent fixture.”
